Vision Statement: The Vision of the IEEE Communications Society is to be the organization of choice for communications and related professionals throughout the world.
Mission Statement: The IEEE Communications Society promotes the advancement of science, technology and applications in communications and related disciplines. It fosters presentation and exchange of information among its members and the technical community throughout the world. The Society maintains the highest standard of professionalism and technical competency.
Goals / Focus of the Local Chapter
The mission of the IEEE Canadian Atlantic Section Communication Society Chapter is to support communications-related research, development, and industry within the Section by bringing together experts from both academia and industry to share their technical knowledge and expertise among ComSoc members and the technical community at large. This network between researchers and business developers is key to the continued growth of the communication technology sector in our Section. The chapter will endeavour to complement the activities of others by providing technically-focused events highlighting the evolution of and upcoming opportunities in this rapidly changing industry. This will be do so by organizing events to highlight the accomplishments and expertise of local success stories in this area, as well as participating in the Distinguished Lecturer Program.
History of the Local Chapter
The local chapter was founded in 1998 by Dr. Ivan Fair who initially chaired the new chapter. The role of chair then pasted to Michael Lamoureux who continued to build on Dr. Fair’s efforts to develop the fledgling chapter. The role of chair then past to Dr. Jacek Ilow and he is the current chair of the chapter.
Traditional Events / Schedules / Formats
Events have traditionally been in the form of a one to one and a half hour lecture style presentation or a tour of a communications-based company or facility. Speakers have been drawn primarily from local companies and organizations with the occasion Distinguished Lecturer organised through the Eastern Area or a visiting professor or industry person whom was present on business related with Dalhousie University or a local company.
Events are usually held during the standard academic terms (September to November and January to March) to take advantage of the large student membership present during those times and to avoid the summer season when many members chose to take vacation time. Events usually begin at 5:30pm so as to not overlap with classes running at the local universities and to catch most industry members immediately following working hours.
Historical Leanings / What Works Well
Events which had very broad topics of discussion tended to draw larger crowds then those which had a very narrow or specific focus. Topics that could be of interest to multiple disciplines (engineering and computer science) were also quite popular. Timing is also important and events starting between 5pm and 6pm worked best as they would allow industry professions to attend the events after the work day before heading out of the city.
