PES/IAS Events in May

The IEEE Canadian Atlantic Section PES/IAS Joint Chapter is pleased to present two exciting events in May. Please see below detail of our upcoming events and register soon to join us in learning.

23 May: WORKSHOP – Electric Boats

RSVP: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/45441

Co-hosted by: PES/IAS Jt. Chapter and OES Chapter

Abstract: There is a long history of electric propulsion use in Marine Vessels and over the past 20 years the industry has seen a surge of interest in diesel electric propulsion and electric thrusters. Dr. Molloy will talk about where the industry stands right now regarding electric and hybrid electric vessels in general and then discuss how the recent progress can be applied to small vessels. There are many exciting applications for small vessels from the AKA Tugs to ferries in Norway and as more renewable energy becomes available, electric options will be looked at more seriously in the marine sector.

Agenda:

  • We will come away with an understanding of the part Nova Scotia can play in the global marine sector in electric small craft.
  • We will work together in groups to estimate how electric boats can be integrated into grid energy systems as energy storage and how the economics look.
  • We will discuss what can be done now and in the near future and learn which obstacles need to be overcome to make electric propulsion a real option in fishing.

25 May: SEMINAR – Maritime Link-HVDC Transmission

RSVP: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/45485

Co-hosted by: PES/IAS Jt. Chapter and YP

Abstract: The Maritime Link Project is part of a larger strategy to address the growing demand for more renewable energy. It will enable the transmission of clean, renewable and reliable electricity from Newfoundland and Labrador to Nova Scotia and beyond.

This presentation will focus on the description of project, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission, technical parameters, technology utilized, control modes and status.

Please register soon as seating is limited.
