The IEEE Canadian Atlantic Section wishes to invite you to attend their 2015 Annual General Meeting taking place on Friday November 27, 2014 @ 5:30 pm in the private function room of the China Town Restaurant on the Bedford Highway near Bedford, Nova Scotia. Sea the connection between renewable energy and electric boats in Nova Scotia


Nova Scotia has committed significantly to investing in the future of Tidal Power. This commitment had produced an exciting opportunity for companies and researchers interested in furthering the development of marine energy; one of those opportunities is in electric boats. Many rural communities around Nova Scotia are in a position to produce tidal power but restricted access to transmission lines puts limits on the quantity of power that can be supported. Energy storage and power line upgrades are options being considered and electric cars and vessels provide a significant storage opportunity. This talk will cover the tidal power opportunity here in NS, the current maritime industry interest in electric vessels and the potential for intersection here in NS. Dr. Molloy will be drawing from her experience in the tidal power industry, her expertise in ship propulsion, her attendance at the recent Electric and Hybrid World Expo in Amsterdam, her work as a Canadian delegate on IEC Marine Energy Standards Committees and her participation in authoring the NSBA report “Review of All-Electric and Hybrid-Electric Propulsion Technology for Small Vessels”.


Sue Molloy, PhD, MEng, BEng, BSc, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, is a consulting engineer, researcher and adjunct professor in Ocean Engineering, specializing in Marine Renewable Energy, Eco-Ships and sustainable engineering. In March 2014, Sue was appointed General Manager of Black Rock Tidal Power (BRTP). Sue is the international convener for the International Electrotechnical Committee TC114 River Turbines ad-hoc committee and one of the Canadian delegates on the Design subcommittee of IEC TC114 Marine Energy. Sue was founded the instrumentation R&D program for FORCE and was a co-chair of the Fundy Energy Research Network (FERN) Engineering Sub-Committee. Sue has taught sustainable engineering, turbomachines and other courses for the Dalhousie University Faculty of Engineering and has taught sustainable design and renewable energy at OCAD University in Toronto. Sue is an adjunct professor in the Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie, a research associate at ACER at Acadia University and Research Fellow of the Verschuren Center at CBU. Sue is currently working on the development of a 5MW tidal power project in the Bay of Fundy at FORCE with BRTP and performing research on small scale turbines and electric vessels.
