Abstract:

Recent advances in sensor networks have greatly encouraged their usage in security, surveillance and healthcare applications. This presentation focuses on the issues, methodologies and algorithms involved in creating multi-sensor based surveillance system and healthcare system. The objective of the surveillance system is to automatically collect real-time information, to detect, identify, and track people for situational awareness and intrusion detection.

The system combines the Wireless technology and Ethernet technology to get data from sensors and cameras for better understanding of the situation. Complex Event Processing (CEP) technology is applied for processing and identifying patterns of interest from multiple streams of events. Tracking is done by Kalman Filter. To prolong the lifetime of the wireless sensor network, power optimization techniques are employed in localization and routing.

In healthcare applications, we use wearable wireless body sensors to monitor a home alone chronic diseased patient. It involves the effective collection of sensor data, sensor web enablement of the health data, finding the abnormalities in vital signs and detecting if the person has fallen.

About the Speaker:

Dr. V. Vaidehi, Professor & Head of the Department of Information Technology, Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Anna University, Chennai, India, has more than 33 years of academic and research experience. She got her BE in ECE from the College of Engineering, Guindy, University of Madras, ME Applied Electronics from MIT and Ph.D in Electronics Engineering from MIT, Anna University, Chennai, India.

She has served as Head-Computer Centre, HOD-Electronics Eng, HOD-Computer Technology. She served as a task team member of ANUSAT, Anna university microsatellite project. She is a recipient of the Association of Commonwealth University (ACU) fellowship to visit Singapore and Malaysia for a period of 3 months. She has undergone training in Multimedia Networking at Ryerson University, Canada under TEQIP programme. She has successfully completed several funded projects from various Government Organizations (ISRO, DOE, LRDE, CDAC, AR&DB, AICTE, MCIT).

Her contributions are extended to the MNC like Xambala Inc., Ericsson. She also contributed to Indian Giants like TCS. She has got 61 national and international journal publications and 181 national and international conferences to her credit and received several awards. Her areas of interest include Wireless Sensor Networks, Network security, Distributed Systems, Data mining and tracking.
